Exercise 4, § 8

Commutative Algebra, VI, 461

Let kk be a field, K=k(X,Y)K = k(X, Y) the field of rational functions in two indeterminates over kk and vv the valuation on KK with values in the group Z×Z\mathbf{Z} \times \mathbf{Z} ordered lexicographically, such that v(X)=(0,1)v(X) = (0, 1), v(Y)=(1,0)v(Y) = (1, 0). Let K′K' be the field K(X)K(\sqrt{X}); show that vv has a single extension v′v' to KK and that e(v′/v)=2e(v'/v) = 2, f(v′/v)=1f(v'/v) = 1, but the ring of the valuation v′v' is not a finitely generated module over the ring of the valuation v.
