Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
Let be a field, the ring of a valuation on , a finite group of automorphisms of , the subfield of consisting of the elements invariant under and , which is a valuation ring of , corresponding to the valuation .
(a) The valuations on which extend are the , where (no. 6, Corollary 1 to Proposition 6) and the integral closure of in is the intersection of the , where runs through . If is the intersection of and the maximal ideal , then . Show that the decomposition group (Chapter V, § 2, no. 2) is the subgroup of consisting of the such that ; write and denote by the subfield of consisting of the elements invariant under and by the ring of the valuation induced on by , which is equal to ; recall that the residue fields of and are the same and that the maximal ideal is generated by (Chapter V, § 2, no. 2, Proposition 4).
(b) Let denote the restriction of to and and the order groups of and . Show that . (Let be the subgroup of consisting of the such that is dependent on (§ 7, no. 2). Argue by induction on the order of . If , let be the field of invariants of and ; show that the order group of is equal to : for this, use the Approximation Theorem (§ 7, no. 2, Theorem 1) in order to prove that, for all x \in K", there exists y \in K" such that v(y) = v(x) and v(y_i) = 0 for the conjugates y, of y with respect to K, distinct from y; then may be replaced by and the induction hypothesis may be applied. If , let B, be the valuation ring of K' generated by the , where ; let be its residue field, the canonical homomorphism, a valuation ring of and the corresponding valuation on such that in B, so that the order group of is a subgroup of the order group A of v; if and , is the canonical homomorphism, is a valuation on K' corresponding to B_0 and invariant under . By taking quotients, defines a group of automorphisms of ; let be the kernel of the canonical homomorphism ; show that and deduce that, if , may be replaced by and the induction hypothesis may be applied. Suppose finally that ; let , and be the restriction of to K; show that the order group of is A, and that is the field of invariants of (cf. no. 1, Lemma 2); if is the restriction to of and its order group, A, is canonically isomorphic to . On the other hand, the group is the canonical image of in ; observe that and that the induction hypothesis may therefore be applied to prove that is equal to the order group of the restriction of to .
(c) Let be the inertia group of (Chapter V, § 2, no. 2) and let denote the subfield of K' consisting of the invariants of and the ring of the valuation induced on by , which is equal to ; recall that, if k and k' are the residue fields of A and B, the residue field of is the greatest separable extension of k contained in the quasi-Galois extension of k and that is canonically isomorphic to the group of k-automorphisms of (or ) (Chapter V, § 2, Theorem 2 and Proposition 5). Let be the restriction of to ; show that the order group of is also equal to (apply Lemma 2 of no. 1 to the extension of ).
