Exercise 16, § 2

Commutative Algebra, VII, 560

Let A be a Priiferian domain, K its field of fractions and L a (finite or otherwise) algebraic extension of K; show that the integral closure A′A' of A in L is a Priiferian domain. (Let x∈Lx \in L and let a0Xn+a1Xn−1+…+ana_0 X^n + a_1 X^{n-1} + \ldots + a_n be a polynomial in A[X]A[X] of which xx is a root; if we write

a0Xn+a1Xn−1+…+an=(X−x)(b0Xn−1+…+bn−1), a_0 X^n + a_1 X^{n-1} + \ldots + a_n = (X - x)(b_0 X^{n-1} + \ldots + b_{n-1}),

show that the bib_i and the bixb_i x belong to A′A', using § 1, Exercise 12 (a). If a=∑i=0nAai, b=∑j=0n−1Bbja = \sum_{i=0}^n A a_i, \ b = \sum_{j=0}^{n-1} B b_j show then that the ideal b.Ba−1b.Ba^{-1} is the inverse of B+BxB + Bx.)
