Exercise 22, § 2

Commutative Algebra, VII, 562

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

(a) Let A\mathbf{A} be a Noetherian domain each of whose prime ideals ≠0\neq 0 is maximal, so that every ideal a≠0a \neq 0 may be written uniquely as a product ∏iqi\prod_i q_i of primary ideals relative to the distinct prime ideals pip_i containing aa.

Let aa be an invertible ideal in A\mathbf{A} and let bb be any ideal ≠0\neq 0 in A\mathbf{A}; show that there exists an ideal cc such that b+c=Ab + c = \mathbf{A} and acac is principal (Observe that, if (pi)1≤i≤n(p_i)_{1 \leq i \leq n} is a finite family of distinct maximal ideals of A\mathbf{A} and we write ri=∏j≠ipjr_i = \prod_{j \neq i} p_j, then a=∑iaria = \sum_i a r_i and ⋂iari=ap1p2…pn\bigcap_i a r_i = a p_1 p_2 \ldots p_n; using Chapter II, § 1, no. 2, Proposition 6, deduce the existence of an element x∈ax \in a such that x−1a+b=Ax^{-1}a + b = \mathbf{A}.) Deduce that aa is generated by two elements (cf. Exercise 1).

(b) Let KK be a field and A\mathbf{A} the subring of the ring of formal power series K[[T]]K[[T]] consisting of the series a0+TnP(T)a_0 + T^n P(T), where a0∈K,P(T)∈K[[T]]a_0 \in K, P(T) \in K[[T]], for a given integer nn. Show that A\mathbf{A} is a Noetherian local integral domain with a single prime ideal m≠0m \neq 0, but that the smallest cardinal of a system of generators of mm is nn.
