Exercise 24, § 3

Commutative Algebra, VII, 570

(a) Let EE be a field of characteristic 2, AA a derivation of EE and KK the subfield of EE the kernel of AA; suppose that [E:K]=2[E : K] = 2. Show that Δ2=aΔ\Delta^2 = a\Delta where a∈Ka \in K and that for an element t∈Et \in E to be of the form Δx/x\Delta x/x, it is necessary and sufficient that At=at+t2At = at + t^2.

(b) Let BB be a factorial local integral domain of characteristic 2, mm its maximal ideal, EE its field of fractions and AA a derivation of EE; suppose that the subfield KK of EE, the kernel of AA, satisfies [E:K]=2[E : K] = 2; moreover, suppose that there exist two elements x,yx, y of mm such that AxAx and AyAy generate the ideal qq of BB generated by Δ(B)\Delta(B). Show then that, if t=Δz/zt = \Delta z/z belongs to qq, there exists an invertible element uu of BB such that t=Δu/ut = \Delta u/u (write t=rΔx+sΔyt = r\Delta x + s\Delta y, where r,sr, s are in BB, and use (a)).
