Exercise 25, § 3

Commutative Algebra, VII, 570

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let kk be a field of characteristic 2, BB the ring of formal power series k[[X,Y]]k[[X, Y]], EE its field of fractions and AA the kk-derivation of EE defined by Δ(X)=Y2j,Δ(Y)=X2i\Delta(X) = Y^{2j}, \Delta(Y) = X^{2i} (i,ji, j integers ⩾0\geqslant 0); the subring AA of BB consisting of the x∈Bx \in B such that Ax=0Ax = 0 is the ring of formal power series in k[[X,Y,Z]]k[[X, Y, Z]] where X2X^2 is substituted for XX, Y2Y^2 for YY and X2i+1+Y2j+1X^{2i+1} + Y^{2j+1} for ZZ.

(a) Show that the group C(A)C(A) contains a vector space over kk of dimension N(i,j)N(i, j) equal to the number of ordered pairs of integers (a,b)(a, b) such that 0≤a<i,0≤b<j0 \leq a < i, 0 \leq b < j and (2j+1)a+(2i+1)b≥2ij(2j+1)a + (2i+1)b \geq 2ij. (Use Exercise 23 (b) and Exercise 24 (a), note that the elements of LL are the formal power series F∈BF \in B such that AF=F2AF = F^2; attributing to XX the weight 2j+12j+1 and to YY the weight 2i+12i+1, decompose FF as an infinite sum of isobaric polynomials; if LrL_r is the subgroup of LL consisting of the F∈LF \in L whose isobaric components are of weight ≥q\geq q, L/L′L/L' is isomorphic to the direct sum of the groups Cq/Cq+1C_q/C_{q+1}, where Cq=Lq/(L′∩Lr)C_q = L_q/(L' \cap L_r); calculate these groups for q≥4ijq \geq 4ij, using Exercise 24 (b).)

(b) Show that the ideal AX2AX^2 of AA is prime; if A′=A[X−2]A' = A[X^{-2}], deduce that C(A′)C(A') and C(A)C(A) are isomorphic (no. 4, Proposition 3). Show that A′A' is a Dedekind domain (consider the ring B′=B[X−2]B' = B[X^{-2}], which is integral over A′A' and a principal ideal domain, and use Chapter V, § 2, no. 4, Theorem 3). Deduce an example of a Dedekind domain whose ideal class group is infinite.
