Exercise 3, § 3

Commutative Algebra, VII, 563

(a) Let A=⨁n≥0An\mathbf{A} = \bigoplus_{n \geq 0} \mathbf{A}_n be a graded algebra with positive degrees over a field kk; suppose that A0=k\mathbf{A}_0 = k and that A\mathbf{A} is a Krull domain. Show that for A\mathbf{A} to be factorial, it is necessary and sufficient that every graded prime ideal pp of A\mathbf{A} of height 1 be of the form p=Aap = \mathbf{A}a, where aa is a homogeneous element (use Exercise 16 of § 1). Show that every homogeneous element ≠0\neq 0 of A\mathbf{A} is a product of homogeneous extremal elements.

(b) Let AA be a graded kk-algebra satisfying the conditions of (a). Let k′k' be an extension of kk and suppose that A⊗kk′A \otimes_k k' is a factorial domain; show that AA is factorial. (If a graded ideal aa of AA is such that a⊗kk′a \otimes_k k' is principal in A⊗kk′A \otimes_k k', show that aa is principal; then use (a).)
