Exercise 5, § 3

Commutative Algebra, VII, 564

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

(a) Let kk be a Noetherian factorial domain and BB the polynomial ring k[X1,…,Xn]k[X_1, \ldots, X_n] where n≥3n \geq 3; let gig_i (0≤i≤r0 \leq i \leq r) be elements of k[X3,…,Xn]k[X_3, \ldots, X_n] where g0g_0 is extremal. Writing g=X1X2−∑i=1rgiX1ig = X_1 X_2 - \sum_{i=1}^r g_i X_1^i, consider the quotient ring A=B/gBA = B/gB. Show that AA is factorial. (Let SS be the multiplicative subset of AA generated by 1 and the image of XX, in AA; apply Proposition 3 of no. 4 to S−1AS^{-1}A.)

(b) Let kk be a field of characteristic ≠2\neq 2 and FF a homogeneous polynomial of the second degree in k[X1,…,Xn]k[X_1, \ldots, X_n] where n≥5n \geq 5, such that the corresponding polynomial function on knk^n is a non-degenerate quadratic form. Show that the domain k[X1,…,Xn]/(F)k[X_1, \ldots, X_n]/(F) is factorial. (Prove first that a homogeneous polynomial GG of the second degree in k[X1,…,Xn]k[X_1, \ldots, X_n], such that the corresponding polynomial function is a non-degenerate quadratic form, is extremal for n≥3n \geq 3. Then prove the proposition when kk is algebraically closed, using (a); finally pass to the general case with the aid of Exercise 3 (b).)

(c) If F=X1X2−X3X4F = X_1 X_2 - X_3 X_4, show that the domain k[X1,X2,X3,X4]/(F)k[X_1, X_2, X_3, X_4]/(F) is not factorial. (Show that the images of the XX, in this ring are extremal elements.)
