Exercise 14, § 4

Commutative Algebra, VII, 575

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let AA be a Prüferian domain (§2§ 2, Exercise 12) and M,NM, N two finitely generated lattices in a vector space VV of finite rank nn over the field of fractions of AA. For all c≠0c \neq 0 in AA such that cN⊂McN \subset M, consider the determinantal ideals δk(M/cN)\delta_k(M/cN) (Exercise 10) and write:

δk(N,M)=ck−nδk(M/cN). \delta_k(N, M) = c^{k-n} \delta_k(M/cN).

(a) Show that δk(N,M)\delta_k(N, M) does not depend on the choice of cc such that cN⊂McN \subset M; these are called the determinantal ideals of NN with respect to MM. (b) δk(N,M)⊂δk+1(N,M)\delta_k(N, M) \subset \delta_{k+1}(N, M) and δn(N,M)=A\delta_n(N, M) = A. Show that, if we write ek(N,M)=δn−k(N,M)(δn−k+1(N,M))−1e_k(N, M) = \delta_{n-k}(N, M)(\delta_{n-k+1}(N, M))^{-1}, the integral ideals ek(N,M)e_k(N, M) are such that ek(N,M)⊃ek+1(N,M)e_k(N, M) \supset e_{k+1}(N, M) for 1≤k≤n1 \leq k \leq n; the finitely generated ideals ek(N,M)e_k(N, M) are called the invariant factors of NN with respect to MM (consider the AmA_m-modules MmM_m and NmN_m for every maximal ideal mm of AA). (c) If MM is a lattice of VV but NN is a lattice in a subspace WW of VV of rank q<nq < n, the invariant factors of NN with respect to M∩WM \cap W are called the invariant factors of NN with respect to MM. Show how Exercises 8 to 10 and 14 to 16 of Algebra, Chapter VII, §4§ 4 may be extended.
