Exercise 4, § 4

Commutative Algebra, VII, 572

Let kk be a field and AA the polynomial ring k[X,Y]k[X, Y]. (a) Let (e1,e2)(e_1, e_2) be the canonical basis of the AA-module A2A^2 and let EE be the sub-AA-module of A2A^2 generated by (X−Y)e1,e1+Xe2(X - Y)e_1, e_1 + Xe_2 and e1+Ye2e_1 + Ye_2; let FF be the monogenous submodule of EE generated by (X−Y)2e1(X - Y)^2e_1. Show that the AA-module M=E/FM = E/F is not the direct sum of its torsion submodule and a torsion-free module. (b) Show that the torsion AA-module A/AXYA/AXY is not a direct sum of monogenous submodules of the form A/pinA/\mathfrak{p}_i^n, where the pi\mathfrak{p}_i are prime ideals of height 1.
