Exercise 1, § 1

Algebra, I, 124

Let E be a set, A⊂E×EA \subset E \times E and (x,y)↦x⊤y, (x,y)∈A(x, y) \mapsto x \top y,\ (x, y) \in A, an internal law of composition not everywhere defined on E. Given two subsets X and Y of E, let X⊤YX \top Y denote the set of elements of E of the form x⊤yx \top y with x∈Xx \in X, y∈Yy \in Y and (x,y)∈A(x, y) \in A. A law of composition is thus defined which is everywhere defined on P(E)\mathscr{P}(E).

If (Xα)α∈A(X_\alpha)_{\alpha \in A} and (Yβ)β∈B(Y_\beta)_{\beta \in B} are any two families of subsets of E, then

(⋃α∈AXα)⊤(⋃β∈BYβ)=⋃(α,β)∈A×B(Xα⊤Yβ). \left( \bigcup_{\alpha \in A} X_\alpha \right) \top \left( \bigcup_{\beta \in B} Y_\beta \right) = \bigcup_{(\alpha, \beta) \in A \times B} (X_\alpha \top Y_\beta).
