Exercise 1, § 10

Algebra, I, 179

Let XX be the direct limit of a direct system (Xi,fji)(X_i, f_{ji}) of sets relative to a right directed set II. Let FiF_i (resp. FF) be the free group constructed on XiX_i (resp. on XX); each fjif_{ji} extends to a homomorphism ϕji:Fi→Fj\phi_{ji}: F_i \to F_j.

(a) Show that (Fi,ϕji)(F_i, \phi_{ji}) is a direct system of groups.

(b) Let εi\varepsilon_i be the composite mapping Xi→Fi→lim⁡Fi→X_i \to F_i \to \lim \overrightarrow{F_i}. Show that εj∘ϕji=εi\varepsilon_j \circ \phi_{ji} = \varepsilon_i if j≥ij \geq i. Let ε\varepsilon be the mapping of XX into lim⁡Fi→\lim \overrightarrow{F_i} defined by the εi\varepsilon_i. Show that ε\varepsilon extends to an isomorphism of FF onto lim⁡Fi→\lim \overrightarrow{F_i} (so that F(lim⁡Xi→)F(\lim \overrightarrow{X_i}) can be identified with lim⁡F(Xi)→\lim \overrightarrow{F(X_i)}).

(c) State and prove analogous results for free magmas, free monoids, free commutative groups, free commutative monoids.
