Exercise 12, § 4

Algebra, I, 134

Let G be a group such that, for a fixed integer n>1n > 1, (xy)n=xnyn(xy)^n = x^n y^n for all x∈G,y∈Gx \in G, y \in G. If G(n)G^{(n)} denotes the set of xnx^n, where xx runs through GG, and G(n)G_{(n)} the set of x∈Gx \in G such that xn=ex^n = e, show that G(n)G^{(n)} and G(n)G_{(n)} are normal subgroups of GG; if GG is finite, the order of G(n)G^{(n)} is equal to the index of G(n)G_{(n)}. Show that, for all x,yx, y in GG, also x1−ny1−n=(xy)1−nx^{1-n} y^{1-n} = (xy)^{1-n} and deduce that xn−1yn=ynxn−1x^{n-1} y^n = y^n x^{n-1}; conclude from this that the set of elements of GG of the form xn(n−1)x^{n(n-1)} generates a commutative subgroup of GG.
