Exercise 13, § 4

Algebra, I, 134

Let GG be a group. If SS is a simple group, SS is said to occur in GG if there exist two subgroups H,H′H, H' of GG with HH a normal subgroup of H′H' such that H′/HH'/H is isomorphic to SS. Let in⁡(G)\operatorname{in}(G) denote the set of isomorphism classes of simple groups occurring in GG. (a) Show that in⁡(G)=∅⇔G={e}\operatorname{in}(G) = \varnothing \Leftrightarrow G = \{e\}. (b) If HH is a subgroup of GG, show that in⁡(H)⊂in⁡(G)\operatorname{in}(H) \subset \operatorname{in}(G); if moreover HH is normal, then

in⁡(G)=in⁡(H)∪in⁡(G/H). \operatorname{in}(G) = \operatorname{in}(H) \cup \operatorname{in}(G/H).
(c) Let G1G_1 and G2G_2 be two groups. Show the equivalence of the two following properties: (i) in⁡(G1)∩in⁡(G2)=∅\operatorname{in}(G_1) \cap \operatorname{in}(G_2) = \varnothing; (ii) Every subgroup of G1×G2G_1 \times G_2 is of the form H1×H2H_1 \times H_2 with H1⊂G1H_1 \subset G_1 and H2⊂G2H_2 \subset G_2. (Use Exercise 8.) When G1G_1 and G2G_2 are finite groups, show that (i) and (ii) are equivalent to: (iii) Card(G1G_1) and Card(G2G_2) are relatively prime.
