Let GG be a group and HH a subgroup of GG. Any subset TT of GG which meets every left coset mod. HH in one and only one point is called a representative system of the left cosets mod. HH (cf. Set Theory, II, § 6, no. 2); this condition is equivalent to the following: The mapping (x,y)↦xy(x, y) \mapsto xy is a bijection of T×HT \times H onto GG. (a) Let TT be such a representative system; for all g∈Gg \in G and all t∈Tt \in T, let x(g,t)∈Tx(g, t) \in T and y(g,t)∈Hy(g, t) \in H be such that gt=x(g,t)y(g,t)gt = x(g, t)y(g, t). Let SS be a subset of GG generating GG. Show that the elements y(g,t),g∈S,t∈Ty(g, t), g \in S, t \in T generate HH. (If H′H' denotes the subgroup of HH generated by these elements, show that T.H′T.H' is stable under the γg,g∈S\gamma_g, g \in S, hence also under the γg,g∈G\gamma_g, g \in G, and deduce that T.H′=GT.H' = G, whence H′=HH' = H.) (b) Suppose that (G:H)(G:H) is finite. Show that GG can be generated by a finite subset if and only if HH can.
