Bourbaki

Exercise 2, § 4

Algebra, I, 132

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

(a) An associative law (x,y)↦xy(x, y) \mapsto xy on a set E is a group law if there exists e∈Ee \in E such that, for all x∈Ex \in E, ex=xex = x and if, for all x∈Ex \in E, there exists x′x' such that x′x=ex'x = e (show that xx′=exx' = e by considering the composition x′xx′x'xx'; deduce that ee is the identity element).

(b) Show that the same is true if, for all x∈Ex \in E, the left translation γx\gamma_x is a mapping of E onto E and if there exists some a∈Ea \in E such that the right translation δa\delta_a is a mapping of E onto E.
