Exercise 4, § 4

Algebra, I, 133

Let AA and BB be two subgroups of a group GG.

(a) Show that the least subgroup containing AA and BB (that is the subgroup generated by A∪BA \cup B) is identical with the set of compositions of the sequences (xi)1≤i≤2n+1(x_i)_{1 \leq i \leq 2n+1} of an (arbitrary) odd number of elements such that xi∈Ax_i \in A for ii odd and xi∈Bx_i \in B for ii even.

(b) For ABAB to be a subgroup of GG (in which case it is the subgroup generated by A∪BA \cup B), it is necessary and sufficient that AA and BB be permutable, that is that AB=BAAB = BA.

(c) If AA and BB are permutable and CC is a subgroup containing AA, AA is permutable with B∩CB \cap C and A(B∩C)=C∩(AB)A(B \cap C) = C \cap (AB).
