Exercise 8, § 4

Algebra, I, 133

Let AA and A′A' be two groups and GG a subgroup of A×A′A \times A'. We write:

N=G∩(A×{e}),H=pr1(G) N = G \cap (A \times \{e\}), \qquad H = \mathrm{pr}_1(G)
N′=G∩({e}×A′),H′=pr2(G). N' = G \cap (\{e\} \times A'), \qquad H' = \mathrm{pr}_2(G).

(a) Show that NN is normal in HH and N′N' is normal in H′H'; define isomorphisms

H/N→G/(N×N′)→H′/N′. H/N \to G/(N \times N') \to H'/N'.

(b) Suppose that H=A,H′=A′H = A, H' = A', that the groups AA and A′A' are of finite length and that no quotient of a Jordan-Hölder series of AA is isomorphic to a quotient of a Jordan-Hölder series of A′A'. Show that G=A×A′G = A \times A'.
