Exercise 9, § 4

Algebra, I, 133

Let GG be a group which does not consist only of the identity element. Suppose that there exists a finite subset SS of GG such that GG is generated by SS (resp. by the elements gsg−1,g∈G,s∈Sgsg^{-1}, g \in G, s \in S). Let N\mathfrak{N} be the set of subgroups of GG (resp. of normal subgroups of GG) distinct from GG. Show that N\mathfrak{N}, ordered by inclusion, is inductive. Deduce the existence of a normal subgroup HH of GG such that G/HG/H is simple.
