Exercise 18, § 5

Algebra, I, 143

Let Γ\Gamma be a group of permutations of a set E. Let A and B be two subsets of E, complements one of the other and stable under Γ\Gamma. Let ΓA\Gamma_A and ΓB\Gamma_B denote the groups consisting of the restrictions of the permutations in Γ\Gamma to A and B respectively and ΔA\Delta_A and ΔB\Delta_B the subgroups of Γ\Gamma which leave invariant respectively every element of A and every element of B. Show that ΔA\Delta_A and ΔB\Delta_B are normal subgroups of Γ\Gamma and that ΓA\Gamma_A is isomorphic to Γ/ΔA\Gamma/\Delta_A and ΓB\Gamma_B to Γ/ΔB\Gamma/\Delta_B; if ΔAB\Delta_{AB} (resp. ΔBA\Delta_{BA}) is the group consisting of the restrictions of the permutations in ΔA\Delta_A (resp. ΔB\Delta_B) to B (resp. A), show that the quotient groups ΓA/ΔBA\Gamma_A/\Delta_{BA}, ΓB/ΔAB\Gamma_B/\Delta_{AB} and Γ/(ΔAΔB)\Gamma/(\Delta_A \Delta_B) are isomorphic (use Exercise 8).
