Exercise 27, § 5

Algebra, I, 146

Let YY be a subset of a set XX and let AA be the fixer of YY in the permutation group SX\mathfrak{S}_X of XX. Let MM be the submonoid of SX\mathfrak{S}_X consisting of the elements ss such that sAs−1⊂AsAs^{-1} \subset A. Show that MM is a subgroup of SX\mathfrak{S}_X if and only if one of the sets YY and X−YX - Y is finite.
