Algebra, I, 162

A group GG is called free if it possesses a basic family and hence is isomorphic to a free group F(X)F(X) constructed on a set XX. (a) Show that, if (ti)i∈I(t_i)_{i \in I} and (tj′)j∈J(t'_j)_{j \in J} are two such families, then Card(I)=Card(J)\mathrm{Card}(I) = \mathrm{Card}(J). (When Card(I)\mathrm{Card}(I) is infinite, show that Card(J)\mathrm{Card}(J) is also and that both are equal to Card(G)\mathrm{Card}(G). When Card(I)\mathrm{Card}(I) is an integer dd, show that the number of subgroups of index 2 in GG is 2d−12^d - 1.) The cardinal of a basic family of GG is called the rank of GG. (b) A free group is of rank 0 (resp. 1) if and only if it reduces to {e}\{e\} (resp. is isomorphic to Z\mathbf{Z}). (c) Let GG be a free group of finite rank dd and (x1,…,xd)(x_1, \ldots, x_d) a generating family of dd elements of GG. Show that this family is basic. (Use Exercise 34 and § 5, Exercise 5.) (d) Show that a free group of rank ≥2\geq 2 contains a free subgroup of given rank dd for every cardinal d≤ℵ0d \leq \aleph_0. (Use Exercise 22.)
