Exercise 24, § 7

Algebra, I, 166

Let G be a group, S=G−{e}S = G - \{e\} and F=F(S)F = F(S). For all s∈Ss \in S, let xsx_s denote the corresponding element of F. If s,t∈Ss, t \in S, let rs,tr_{s,t} denote the element of F defined by:

rs,t=xsxtxst−1if st≠e in Grs,t=xsxtif st=e in G. r_{s,t} = x_s x_t x_{st}^{-1} \quad \text{if } st \neq e \text{ in } G \\ r_{s,t} = x_s x_t \quad \text{if } st = e \text{ in } G.
Let ϕ\phi be the homomorphism of F onto G which maps xsx_s to s and let R be the kernel of ϕ\phi. Show that the family (rs,t)(r_{s,t}) for s,t∈S×Ss, t \in S \times S, is a basic family of the group R. (Apply Exercise 20 to the system of representatives of G in F consisting of e and the xsx_s.)
