Exercise 28, § 7

Algebra, I, 167

We preserve the notation of the preceding exercise.

(a) Let NN be a subgroup of AA. Suppose that, for all i∈Ii \in I, the group NN is normal in GiG_i. Show that NN is normal in G=∗AGiG = *_A G_i and that the canonical homomorphism of ∗A/NGi/N*_{A/N} G_i / N into G/NG / N is an isomorphism.

(b) For all i∈Ii \in I, let HiH_i be a subgroup of GiG_i and let BB be a subgroup of AA. Suppose that Hi∩A=BH_i \cap A = B for all ii. Show that the canonical homomorphism of ∗BHi*_B H_i into GG is injective; its image is the subgroup of GG generated by the HiH_i.
