Bourbaki

Exercise 29, § 7

Algebra, I, 167

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let G=G1∗AG2G = G_1 *_A G_2 be the sum of two groups G1G_1 and G2G_2 amalgamated by a subgroup AA.

(a) Show that GG is finitely generated if G1G_1 and G2G_2 are finitely generated.

(b) Suppose G1G_1 and G2G_2 are finitely presented. Show the equivalence of the two following properties: (1) GG is finitely presented. (2) AA is finitely generated.

(Show first that (1) implies (2). On the other hand, if AA is not finitely generated, there exists a right directed family (Ai)i∈I(A_i)_{i \in I} of subgroups of AA with ⋃i∈IAi=A\bigcup_{i \in I} A_i = A and Ai≠AA_i \neq A for all ii. Let HiH_i (resp. HH) be the kernel of the canonical homomorphism of G1∗G2G_1 * G_2 onto G1∗AiG2G_1 *_{A_i} G_2 (resp. onto GG). Show that HH is the union of the HiH_i and that Hi≠HH_i \neq H for all ii; then apply Exercise 16(d).)

(c) Deduce an example of a finitely generated group which is not finitely presented. (Take G1G_1 and G2G_2 to be free groups of rank 2 and AA a free group of finite rank, cf. Exercise 22.)
