Exercise 32, § 7

Algebra, I, 168

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let A and B be two groups and G=A∗BG = A * B their free product. Let X be the set of commutators (a,b)(a, b) with a∈A−{e}a \in A - \{e\} and b∈B−{e}b \in B - \{e\} and S=X∪X−1S = X \cup X^{-1}.

(a) Show that X∩X−1=∅X \cap X^{-1} = \varnothing and that, if xx is an element of X, there exists a unique ordered pair a,ba, b in (A−{e})×(B−{e})(A - \{e\}) \times (B - \{e\}) such that (a,b)=x(a, b) = x.

(b) Let n≥1n \geq 1 and let s1,…,sns_1, \ldots, s_n be a sequence of elements of S such that sisi+1≠es_i s_{i+1} \neq e for 1≤i<n1 \leq i < n; let an∈A−{e},bn∈B−{e},ε(n)=±1a_n \in A - \{e\}, b_n \in B - \{e\}, \varepsilon(n) = \pm 1 be such that sn=(an,bn)ε(n)s_n = (a_n, b_n)^{\varepsilon(n)}. Let g=s1…sng = s_1 \ldots s_n. Show, by induction on nn, that the reduced decomposition of gg is of length ≥n+3\geq n + 3 and terminates either with anbna_n b_n if ε(n)=1\varepsilon(n) = 1 or with bnanb_n a_n if ε(n)=−1\varepsilon(n) = -1.

(c) Let R be the kernel of the canonical projection A∗B→A×BA * B \to A \times B corresponding (no. 3) to the canonical injections A→A×BA \to A \times B and B→A×BB \to A \times B. Show that R is a free group with basic family X. (Use (b) to prove that X is free; if RXR_X is the subgroup of G generated by X, show that RXR_X is normal; deduce that it coincides with R.)
