Let E=G∗AG′ be the sum of two groups amalgamated by a common subgroup A. Let P (resp. P') be a subset of G (resp. G') satisfying condition (A) of no. 3.
Let n be an integer ≥1. Let Ln denote the set of x∈E whose reduced decomposition is of length ≤2n−1. Let Mn denote the set of x∈E of the form ap1p1′p2p2′…pnpn′, with a∈A,pi∈P−{e},pi′∈P′−{e}; similarly, let Mn′ denote the set of elements of the form ap1′p1p2′p2…pn′pn, where a,pi,pi′ satisfy the same conditions.
(a) Show that Ln,Mn and Mn′ are disjoint and that their union is the set of elements of E whose reduced decomposition is of length ≤2n.
(b) Construct a bijection ε of Mn onto Mn′ such that ε(ax)=aε(x) if a∈A,x∈Mn.
(c) Let Xn=Ln∪Mn and Xn′=Ln∪Mn′; show that G.Xn=Xn and G′.Xn′=Xn′.
(d) ε extends to a bijection of Xn onto Xn′ by setting ε(x)=x if x∈Ln. Show that E can operate on Xn so that g(x)=gx if g∈G,x∈Xn and g′(x)=ε−1(g′∈(x)) if g′∈G′,x∈Xn. Show that, if g∈Xn, then g(e)=g.
(e) Let τn:E→GXn be the homomorphism defined by the action of E on Xn described above and let Rn be the kernel of τn. Show that Rn∩Xn={e}; deduce that the intersection of the Rn reduces to e.
(f) When G and G′ are finite, show that E is residually finite (cf. § 5, Exercise 5). (Note that the Rn are then subgroups of finite index.)
