Exercise 35, § 7

Algebra, I, 169

Let GG (resp. G′G') be the additive group of fractions of the form a/ba/b with a∈Z,b∈Za \in \mathbf{Z}, b \in \mathbf{Z} and bb not divisible by 2 (resp. by 3). Let E=G∗ZG′E = G *_{\mathbf{Z}} G' be the sum of GG and G′G' amalgamated by their common subgroup Z\mathbf{Z}. Show that GG and G′G' are residually finite, but that EE is not. (Prove that the only subgroup of EE of finite index is EE.)
