Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
Let be the free magma constructed on a set with one element.
(a) For all , show that there exists a unique endomorphism of such that ; it is an isomorphism of onto the submagma generated by (cf. Exercise 6).
(b) If , we write . Show that the law of composition makes into a monoid with identity element which is isomorphic to the monoid of endomorphisms of .
(c) Let be the set of monogenous submagmas of distinct from . An element of is called primitive if is a maximal element of . Show that are primitive whereas are not.
(d) Let be the set of primitive elements of . Show that, if , then (use Exercise 6).
(e) Let be the free monoid constructed on . If is given the monoid structure defined in (b), the injection can be extended to a homomorphism . Show that is an isomorphism.
(If , show by induction on that . On the other hand, if are such that , then , whence and ; whence and it follows that arguing by induction on .)
