Exercise 13, § 8

Algebra, I, 173

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let AA be a ring and ee an idempotent of AA. (a) Show that the additive group of AA is the direct sum of the left ideal a=Aea = Ae and the left annihilator bb of ee (note that, for all x∈A,x−xe∈bx \in A, x - xe \in b). (b) Every right ideal dd of AA is the direct sum of d∩ad \cap a and d∩bd \cap b. (c) If Ae=eA,aAe = eA, a and bb are two-sided ideals of AA and define a direct decomposition of AA.
