Exercise 14, § 1

Algebra, II, 383

Let L be a well-ordered set, E an A-module and (Eλ)λ∈L(E_\lambda)_{\lambda \in L} an increasing family of submodules of E such that: (1) there exists a λ∈L\lambda \in L such that E={0}E = \{0\}; (2) E is the union of the EλE_\lambda for λ∈L\lambda \in L; (3) if λ∈L\lambda \in L is such that the set of μ<λ\mu < \lambda admits a greatest element λ′\lambda', EλE_\lambda is the direct sum Eλ′E_{\lambda'} and a submodule FλF_\lambda; (4) if λ∈L\lambda \in L is the least upper bound of the set of μ<λ\mu < \lambda, then EλE_\lambda is the union of the EμE_\mu for μ<λ\mu < \lambda. Under these conditions, show that E is the direct sum of the FλF_\lambda. (Prove by transfinite induction that each EλE_\lambda is the direct sum of the FμF_\mu such that μ≤λ\mu \leq \lambda.)
