Exercise 25, § 1

Algebra, II, 386

Let E, F be two A-modules and u:E→Fu: E \to F a linear mapping. Show that the mapping (x,y)↦(x,y−u(x))(x, y) \mapsto (x, y - u(x)) of the product module E×FE \times F to itself is an automorphism of E×FE \times F. Deduce that if there exists a linear mapping v:F→Ev: F \to E and an a∈Ea \in E such that v(u(a))=av(u(a)) = a, there exists an automorphism ww of E×FE \times F such that w(a,0)=(0,u(a))w(a, 0) = (0, u(a)).
