Exercise 27, § 1

Algebra, II, 386

Let A be a commutative ring. Show that if an ideal J\mathfrak{J} of A is a free A-module, then J\mathfrak{J} is a monogenous A-module (in other words a principal ideal). Give an example showing that the proposition does not extend to the left ideals in a non-commutative ring (Exercise 16).
