Exercise 3, § 1

Algebra, II, 380

Let E be an A-module.

(a) Let (Lμ)μ∈M(L_\mu)_{\mu \in M} be a family of right directed ordered sets and, for all μ∈M\mu \in M, let (Fλμ)λ∈Lμ(F_{\lambda \mu})_{\lambda \in L_\mu} be an increasing family of submodules of E. Show that

⋂μ∈M(∑λ∈LμFλμ)=∑ρ∈∏μLμ(⋂μ∈MFρ(μ),μ). \bigcap_{\mu \in M} \left( \sum_{\lambda \in L_\mu} F_{\lambda \mu} \right) = \sum_{\rho \in \prod_\mu L_\mu} \left( \bigcap_{\mu \in M} F_{\rho(\mu), \mu} \right).

(b) Take A to be a field and E the A-module ANA^N; let G be the submodule A(N)A^{(N)} of E; on the other hand, for every finite subset H of N\mathbf{N}, let FHF_H be the submodule ∏n∈NMn\prod_{n \in \mathbf{N}} M_n of E, where Mn=AM_n = A for n∉Hn \notin H and Mn=0M_n = 0 for n∈Hn \in H. Show that the family (FH)(F_H), where H runs throughout the set Φ\Phi of finite subsets of N\mathbf{N} is right directed and that

(⋂H∈ΦFH)+G≠⋂H∈Φ(FH+G). \left( \bigcap_{H \in \Phi} F_H \right) + G \neq \bigcap_{H \in \Phi} (F_H + G).
