Exercise 10, § 10

Algebra, II, 419

Let X,X′,Y,Y′X, X', Y, Y' be four square matrices of order nn over a ring AA, such that XX is invertible. For there to exist two invertible square matrices P,QP, Q of order nn such that X′=PXQX' = PXQ and Y′=PYQY' = PYQ, it is necessary and sufficient that X′X' be invertible and that the matrices YX−1YX^{-1} and Y′X′−1Y'{X'}^{-1} be similar.
