(a) Let XX be a square matrix over a ring A\mathbf{A}, which can be written as an upper triangular matrix (Xij)(X_{ij}) of matrices (1≤i≤p, 1≤j≤p1 \leq i \leq p,\ 1 \leq j \leq p). Show that if each of the square matrices XiiX_{ii} (1≤i≤p1 \leq i \leq p) is invertible, so is XX and X−1X^{-1} can be written as an upper triangular matrix (Yij)(Y_{ij}) (1≤i≤p, 1≤j≤p1 \leq i \leq p,\ 1 \leq j \leq p) corresponding to the same partition of the indexing set. When A\mathbf{A} is a field, prove that this sufficient condition for XX to be invertible is also necessary.

(b) Give an example of a ring A\mathbf{A} and a matrix (a10b)\begin{pmatrix} a & 1 \\ 0 & b \end{pmatrix} (with a∈A, b∈Aa \in \mathbf{A},\ b \in \mathbf{A}) which is invertible without either aa or bb being invertible in A\mathbf{A} and whose inverse (a′b′c′d′)\begin{pmatrix} a' & b' \\ c' & d' \end{pmatrix} is such that b′≠0b' \neq 0 and c′≠0c' \neq 0 (take A\mathbf{A} to be the endomorphism ring of an infinite-dimensional vector space).
