Algebra, II, 418

Let A\mathbf{A} be a ring, C\mathbf{C} its centre, B\mathbf{B} the ring of matrices Mn(A)\mathbf{M}_n(\mathbf{A}), Δ\Delta the additive subgroup of A\mathbf{A} generated by the elements αβ−βα\alpha \beta - \beta \alpha for α∈A, β∈A\alpha \in \mathbf{A},\ \beta \in \mathbf{A}, and D\mathbf{D} the additive subgroup of B\mathbf{B} generated by the matrices XY−YXXY - YX for X∈B, Y∈BX \in \mathbf{B},\ Y \in \mathbf{B}; Δ\Delta and D\mathbf{D} are C\mathbf{C}-modules. For every matrix X=(ξij)∈BX = (\xi_{ij}) \in \mathbf{B}, let θ(X)\theta(X) be the element ∑i=1nξˉij\sum_{i=1}^n \bar{\xi}_{ij} of A/Δ\mathbf{A}/\Delta, where, for all α∈A\alpha \in \mathbf{A}, αˉ\bar{\alpha} denotes the class of α\alpha mod. Δ\Delta. Show that θ\theta is a surjective homomorphism of B\mathbf{B} onto A/Δ\mathbf{A}/\Delta, whose kernel is equal to D\mathbf{D}, so that B/D\mathbf{B}/\mathbf{D} is isomorphic to A/Δ\mathbf{A}/\Delta as a C\mathbf{C}-module. (Observe that D\mathbf{D} contains the matrices αEij\alpha E_{ij} and the matrices α(Eii−Ejj)\alpha(E_{ii} - E_{jj}) for α∈A\alpha \in \mathbf{A} and i≠ji \neq j.)
