Exercise 8, § 10

Algebra, II, 419

Let X=(αij)X = (\alpha_{ij}) be a matrix with mm rows and nn columns over a field KK. For XX to be of rank 1, it is necessary and sufficient that there exist in KK a family (λi)1≤i≤m(\lambda_i)_{1 \leq i \leq m} of mm elements not all zero and a family (μj)1≤j≤n(\mu_j)_{1 \leq j \leq n} of nn elements not all zero such that αij=λiμj\alpha_{ij} = \lambda_i \mu_j for every ordered pair of indices.
