Exercise 1, § 6

Algebra, II, 399

Let (En,fnm)(E_n, f_{nm}) be the inverse system of Z\mathbf{Z}-modules whose indexing set is N\mathbf{N}, such that En=ZE_n = \mathbf{Z} for all nn and, for n≤mn \leq m, fnmf_{nm} is the mapping x↦3m−nxx \mapsto 3^{m-n}x. For all nn, let unu_n be the canonical mapping En→Z/2ZE_n \to \mathbf{Z}/2\mathbf{Z}. Show that (un)(u_n) is an inverse system of surjective linear mappings but that lim⁡←un\lim \leftarrow u_n is not surjective.
