Exercise 3, § 6

Algebra, II, 399

Let (Fn,fmn)(F_n, f_{mn}) be the direct system of Z\mathbf{Z}-modules such that FnF_n is equal to UpU_p (§ 1, Exercise 12 (d)) for all n≥0n \geq 0 and fmnf_{mn} is the endomorphism x↦pm−nxx \mapsto p^{m-n}x of UpU_p for n≤mn \leq m. Show that lim⁡→Fn={0}\lim \rightarrow F_n = \{0\} although the fmnf_{mn} are surjective.
