Algebra, II, 399

Let (Fα,fβα)(F_\alpha, f_{\beta\alpha}) be a direct system of A-modules. (a) For every A-module E, define a canonical Z\mathbf{Z}-module homomorphism

ε:lim⁡→HomA(E,Fα)→HomA(E,lim⁡→Fα). \varepsilon : \lim \rightarrow \mathrm{Hom}_A(E, F_\alpha) \to \mathrm{Hom}_A(E, \lim \rightarrow F_\alpha).
(b) Show that if E is finitely generated, ε\varepsilon is injective. Give an example where ε\varepsilon is not injective (cf. Exercise 3, taking E=lim⁡→FαE = \lim \rightarrow F_\alpha).

(c) Show that if E is finitely generated and the fβαf_{\beta \alpha} are injective, ε\varepsilon is surjective. Give an example where E=lim⁡⟶FαE = \lim_{\longrightarrow} F_\alpha is free, the fβαf_{\beta \alpha} are injective and ε\varepsilon is not surjective.

(d) Show that if E is projective and finitely generated, ε\varepsilon is bijective.

(e) Let A be an integral domain and aa an ideal of A which is not finitely generated. If (aα)(a_\alpha) is the family of finitely generated ideals contained in aa, show that E=A/aE = A/a is canonically isomorphic to the direct limit of the Fα=A/aαF_\alpha = A/a_\alpha, but that the homomorphism ε\varepsilon is not surjective.
