Exercise 10, § 11

Algebra, III, 648

From every identity Φ=0\Phi = 0 between minors of an arbitrary invertible square matrix XX of order nn over A another identity Φ~=0\tilde{\Phi} = 0 can be derived called the complement of Φ=0\Phi = 0, by applying the identity Φ=0\Phi = 0 to the minors of the adjoint X~\tilde{X} of XX and then replacing the minors of X~\tilde{X} by functions of the minors of XX using identity (1) of Exercise 9. In this way show the following identity:

det⁡(Xih)det⁡(Xjk)−det⁡(Xik)det⁡(Xjh)=(det⁡X)det⁡(Xij,hk)for i<j \det(X^{ih}) \det(X^{jk}) - \det(X^{ik}) \det(X^{jh}) = (\det X) \det(X^{ij, hk}) \quad \text{for } i < j
where Xij,hkX^{ij, hk} denotes the minor of XX of order n−2n - 2 obtained by suppressing in XX the rows of index i,ji, j and the columns of index h,kh, k.
