Algebra, III, 649

Let Γ\Gamma and Δ\Delta be two determinants of invertible matrices of order nn over a commutative ring and Γij\Gamma_{ij} the determinant obtained by replacing in Γ\Gamma the column of index ii by the column of Δ\Delta of index jj. Show that

det⁡(Γij)=Γn−1Δ. \det(\Gamma_{ij}) = \Gamma^{n-1} \Delta.
(Expand Γij\Gamma_{ij} by the ii-th column and use Exercise 9.)
