Exercise 16, § 11

Algebra, III, 650

Let E be a free A-module of dimension nn. The regressive product of x∈⋀(E)x \in \bigwedge(E) and y∈⋀(E)y \in \bigwedge(E) with respect to a basis {e}\{e\} of ⋀n(E)\bigwedge^n(E), denoted by x∨yx \vee y, is the element ϕ(ϕ(x)∧ϕ(y))\phi(\phi(x) \wedge \phi(y)), the isomorphism ϕ\phi being relative to ee. This product is only defined to within an invertible factor, depending on the basis {e}\{e\} chosen. Show that if xx is a pp-vector and yy a qq-vector, x∨y=0x \vee y = 0 if p+q<np + q < n and that, if p+q≥np + q \geq n, x∨yx \vee y is a (p+q−n)(p + q - n)-vector such that

y∨x=(−1)(n−p)(n−q)x∨y. y \vee x = (-1)^{(n-p)(n-q)} x \vee y.

The regressive product is associative and distributive with respect to addition and defines on ⋀(E)\bigwedge(E) a unital algebra structure isomorphic to the exterior algebra structure. Express the components of x∨yx \vee y as a function of those of xx and yy for a given basis on E.
