Exercise 10, § 5

Algebra, III, 631

Let A be a commutative ring,

M′→uM→vM′′⟶0 M' \xrightarrow{u} M \xrightarrow{v} M'' \longrightarrow 0
an exact sequence of A-modules and nn an integer >0> 0. Let L=Coker(Tn(u))L = \mathrm{Coker}(T^n(u)) so that there is an exact sequence
Tn(M′)→Tn(u)Tn(M)→L→0. T^n(M') \xrightarrow{T^n(u)} T^n(M) \to L \to 0.
For every subset J of the set {1,2,…,n}\{1, 2, \ldots, n\}, we write
PJ=N1⊗N2⊗⋯⊗Nn,where Ni=M′ if i∈J,Ni=M if i∉J P_J = N_1 \otimes N_2 \otimes \cdots \otimes N_n,\quad \text{where } N_i = M' \text{ if } i \in J, N_i = M \text{ if } i \notin J
(P∅P_\varnothing is therefore equal to Tn(M)T^n(M)) and
QJ=N1⊗N2⊗⋯⊗Nn,where Ni=M′ if i∈J,Ni=M′′ if i∉J Q_J = N_1 \otimes N_2 \otimes \cdots \otimes N_n,\quad \text{where } N_i = M' \text{ if } i \in J, N_i = M'' \text{ if } i \notin J
(Q∅Q_\varnothing is therefore equal to Tn(M′′)T^n(M'')). For every integer ii such that 0≤i≤n0 \leq i \leq n, let P(i)P^{(i)} denote the submodule of Tn(M)T^n(M) generated by the union of the images of the PJP_J for all the subsets JJ such that Card(J)=i\mathrm{Card}(J) = i and let L(i)L^{(i)} be the canonical image of P(i)P^{(i)} in LL.

(a) Show that there exists a canonical surjective homomorphism

⨁Card(J)=iQJ→L(i)/L(i+1) \bigoplus_{\mathrm{Card}(J)=i} Q_J \to L^{(i)}/L^{(i+1)}

(cf. II, § 5, no. 6, Proposition 6).

(b) If the sequence 0→M′→uM→vM′′→00 \to M' \xrightarrow{u} M \xrightarrow{v} M'' \to 0 is exact and splits, show that the homomorphism defined in (a) is bijective.
