Exercise 10, § 8

Algebra, III, 639

Let Γ,Δ\Gamma, \Delta be the determinants of two matrices U,VU, V of order nn; let H and K be any two subsets of {1,n}\{1, n\} with pp elements and (ik)(i_k) (resp. (jk)(j_k)) the sequence obtained by arranging the elements of H (resp. K) in increasing order; let ΓH,K\Gamma_{H, K} be the determinant obtained by replacing in UU the column of index iki_k by the column of VV of index jkj_k, for 1≤k≤p1 \leq k \leq p; similarly let ΔK,H\Delta_{K, H} be the determinant obtained by replacing in VV the column of index jkj_k by the column of UU of index iki_k, for 1≤k≤p1 \leq k \leq p. Show that, for every subset HH of {1,n}\{1, n\} with pp elements,

ΓΔ=∑KΓH,KΔK,H \Gamma \Delta = \sum_K \Gamma_{H, K} \Delta_{K, H}

where KK runs through the set of subsets of {1,n}\{1, n\} with pp elements (use formulae (21) and (22) of no. 6).
