Exercise 16, § 8

Algebra, III, 641

Let E,F\mathbf{E}, \mathbf{F} be two free A\mathbf{A}-modules of respective dimensions mm and nn. For a linear mapping u:E→Fu : \mathbf{E} \to \mathbf{F} to be injective, it is necessary and sufficient that m≤nm \leq n and that, if XX denotes the matrix of uu with respect to any two bases of E\mathbf{E} and F\mathbf{F}, there exist no scalar μ≠0\mu \neq 0 such that the products by μ\mu of all the minors of XX of order mm are zero.
