Exercise 18, § 8

Algebra, III, 641

Let E\mathbf{E} and F\mathbf{F} be two free A\mathbf{A}-modules of respective dimensions mm and nn, u:E→Fu : \mathbf{E} \to \mathbf{F} a linear mapping and XX the matrix of uu with respect to any two bases of E\mathbf{E} and F\mathbf{F}. (a) If m≥nm \geq n and there exists a minor of XX of order nn which is invertible, uu is surjective. (b) Conversely, if uu is surjective, show that m≥nm \geq n and that there exists a minor of XX of order nn which is non-zero. If further, in the ring AA, the ideal generated by the non-invertible elements is distinct from AA, there exists a minor of XX of order nn which is invertible (consider the exterior power ⋀nu\bigwedge^n u).

(c) Let BB be a commutative ring and AA the product ring B×BB \times B. Give an example of a surjective linear mapping of the AA-module A2A^2 onto AA, all the elements of whose matrix (with respect to the canonical bases of A2A^2 and AA) are divisors of zero.
