Exercise 19, § 8

Algebra, III, 642

Let XX be a matrix over a commutative field. For XX to be of rank pp, it suffices that there exist a minor of XX of order pp which is ≠0\neq 0 and such that all the minors of order p+1p + 1 containing this minor of order pp are zero (show that every column of XX is then a linear combination of the pp columns to which the elements of the minor of order pp in question belong).
