Algebra, III, 642

Let AA be a commutative ring, MM an arbitrary AA-module and U=(αij)U = (\alpha_{ij}) a matrix of type (m,n)(m, n) with elements in AA.

(a) Suppose that m=nm = n and let Δ=det⁡(U)\Delta = \det(U); then, if x1,…,xnx_1, \ldots, x_n are elements of MM such that ∑j=1nαijxj=0\sum_{j=1}^n \alpha_{ij} x_j = 0 for 1≤i≤n1 \leq i \leq n, then Δxi=0\Delta x_i = 0 for every index ii.

(b) Suppose that mm and nn are arbitrary, that all the minors of UU of order >r> r are zero and that a minor of order rr is invertible, for example that of the matrix (αij)(\alpha_{ij}) where i≤ri \leq r and j≤rj \leq r; then if aia_i denotes the row of index ii in UU, the aia_i of index ≤r\leq r form a basis of the submodule of AnA^n generated by all the rows of UU; for i>ri > r, therefore ai=∑k=1rλikaka_i = \sum_{k=1}^r \lambda_{ik} a_k. Then let y1,…,ymy_1, \ldots, y_m be elements of MM; for there to exist elements x1,…,xnx_1, \ldots, x_n of MM satisfying the system of equations ∑j=1nαijxj=yi\sum_{j=1}^n \alpha_{ij} x_j = y_i for 1≤i≤m1 \leq i \leq m, it is necessary and sufficient that yi=∑k=1rλikyky_i = \sum_{k=1}^r \lambda_{ik} y_k for i>ri > r.
